Caring for Cedar
Should I paint, stain or leave it to weather?
Many furniture owners prefer the weathered, rustic look of untreated Western Red Cedar. You can leave it alone or apply a wood preservative designed for cedar. I recommend Minwax © products for use on cedar. Be sure to clean and lightly sand your furniture before starting. Stain and paint drip even with a steadiest hand. Remember to use a drop cloth and wear old clothing. Work in a well ventilated area and away from open flames. Staining cedar with a compatible stain by following manufacturer’s instructions will also extend the furniture’s beauty. The stain should be designed for exterior use. Stains come in transparent or colored shades. They penetrate the wood surface and will not chip or flake. Sample the stain color by applying a small amount on in underside of the furniture first. After it has dried you will see the final shade. If it is too dark, pick a lighter shade without redoing the entire piece of furniture. You can also add a clear coat over the stain for added protection. Make sure the clear coat is compatible with the stain and is rated for UV exposure.
Painting cedar will also prolong its lifespan. Paints are made to be for interior or exterior use. Decide which is best based on where furniture will be located. Before painting you need to prepare the cedar by sanding and using a primer. Using a semi-gloss latex rather that an oil based enamel will yield better results. Enamel will eventually flake or peel especially when exposed to higher temperatures. Expect a good exterior latex paint to last roughly 1-3 years.
Left unfinished, Cedar should last for many years outdoors and longer indoors. As Red Cedar ages, its silvery-grey surface actually enhances its UV protection by blocking sun from reaching the woods interior. Covering cedar furniture and keeping it dry during colder periods will also prolong its life. If possible it is best to store cedar out of the elements during winter. Outdoor furniture should be cleaned at least once a year. Cleaning with a pressure washer can help restore the original unfinished appearance. If detergents are used, make sure the furniture is thoroughly rinsed off.
